Promoting Sustainable Options in Atlanta

The dichotomy of getting where we all need to go, but doing it sustainably, is the bane of almost all Atlantans. Root Local’s Travel & Transportation area of focus tackles this issue by looking at how we can reduce the use of environmentally high-impact transportation methods by seeking out ways to support and promote more sustainable options.

Stats and facts:

  • The greenhouse gas emissions created by traffic pollution is a leading cause of climate change.
  • As of March 2023, transportation from passenger cars, public transportation, and “trucks and vans that handle shopping and deliveries”, contributed to about “5 million tons of emissions a month in Georgia.”
  • The lack of sustainable transportation in Atlanta disproportionately affects marginalized communities, giving them less access to essentials services, education, and jobs.
  • Traffic congestion attributes to low morale and lost productivity in the workplace as well as reduces opportunities to build relationships and engage in activities with co-workers outside of work due to lengthy commute times.
